Frequently asked questions
How does Wyatt work?
Wyatt is a fully responsive, AI-powered digital FAFSA advisor. When you sign up, Wyatt will guide you through each step of your application. You’ll get regular reminders to help you get your application done on time. You can also text Wyatt anytime, day or night, with questions about the FAFSA and get instant, reliable answers.
Who can use Wyatt?
Wyatt is designed to help high school seniors and other first-time filers complete the FAFSA.
What kind of questions can I ask Wyatt?
Wyatt can answer questions about your FSA ID (you’ll need one to apply), eligibility, deadlines, and more. You can also text Wyatt to find out what documentation is required to submit your FAFSA and what you’ll need from a parent for your application.
Here are a few examples of questions you can ask Wyatt:
- Who should start my FAFSA, me or my parent/guardian?
- How do I know if my application has been submitted?
- Who should I name as a “contributor”?
- What if my parents didn’t file taxes?
- How should I list my schools?
- Should I complete the FAFSA if I’m undocumented?
Why should I fill out the FAFSA?
The FAFSA is the gateway to get help paying for college. It can unlock thousands of dollars in federal grants, student loans, state assistance, and other resources to make college more affordable. Students who complete the FAFSA are more likely to attend college right away — and in some states, filling out the FAFSA is a requirement for high school graduation.
Not filling out the FAFSA could really cost you. More than 40% of last year’s high school graduating class didn’t complete the FAFSA, leaving almost $3.6 billion (with a “b”) on the table.
What’s changing with the FAFSA this year?
The FAFSA is getting a major overhaul for the 2024-2025 award year, including a new set of questions, new eligibility calculations, and changes to how grants are calculated.
Also, this year’s FAFSA won’t be available until December — two months later than normal. This means you’ll have less time to complete your application.
That’s where Wyatt comes in. Wyatt is fully up to speed on all the latest changes to the FAFSA, ensuring you’ll get fast, accurate answers to get your application done right.
Why do I have to give Wyatt my phone number?
You’ll need to provide your cell phone number so you can chat with Wyatt. Wyatt will use your number to text occasional reminders to help you stay on track with your application. You can also text Wyatt with questions as you fill out the FAFSA — anytime you like, 24/7.
Does it cost anything to use Wyatt?
Wyatt is free for students to use. There’s no limit to how many questions you can ask. Keep in mind, your cell phone carrier’s standard message and data rates may apply. You can opt out anytime by replying STOP.
What do you do with the information I give Wyatt?
Wyatt will not ask you to share any sensitive personal or financial information (your Social Security number, for example). Any personally identifiable information you do provide will not be shared with a third party. For more information, see Wyatt's Terms of Service.
